So called 'Killer Wasp' - Dolichovespula media
Once local and southern in Britain but spreading northwards. Body length 15 - 30 mm, somewhat larger than common wasp. Not to be confused with German Wasp (Vespula germanica) which has diamond and triangular black centre extensions to abdomen bands and a double group of yellow markings at rear of thorax and a triangular arrangement of three black dots on face.
The pictures were taken on Fuji Provia 100F and scanned using a Minolta Dimâge Scan Elite II.

Dynax 7 with 100mm Macro D and Macro Ring Flash 1200.
